This will be my first summer at home in a long time. For the past few summers I have been either in graduate school in Nanaimo (for the in-person part) or visiting my parents in the United States. With the degree finished and COVID-19 border restrictions in place, my travel plans for this summer are now limited. As of now, Ron and I have no plans for travel outside of weekend trips in the immediate region. (The original plan: A month in Ireland with my mom and aunt. And then a month in Scandinavia with Ron.)
So…I have writing plans instead. As a friend told me today, ever since the B.C. Teachers’ Federation Annual General Meeting I have been in a “blogging-frenzy”. The frenzy was unplanned. Witnessing a lack of leadership from my union during COVID-19 was hard. It took some time to process, and hopefully some of the ideas I wrote about in the immediate aftermath of the AGM have helped make things better. The BCTF’s leadership is moving forward on some ideas – such working with government on a planning committee this summer (far from what I think is actually needed but something) and returning formal processes for advice giving to its advisory committees (an important step).
Before the pandemic I had planned to withdraw from working with the union at the provincial level, mostly because my time seemed better directed elsewhere. I’m still planning on focusing most of my time at the local level: My classroom and school, the local union, and community work (such as working with the Prince Rupert Labour Council). In addition to this local focus, I’d like to drill down to some more serious writing about education in the context of my work here. (I never planned to write so much about education politics and I want to move back to more interesting topics.)
To that end, I have two writing projects this summer and one goal.
The one goal is to be more disciplined in my approach to writing. Part of that includes writing blog posts on a weekly (not more and not less) basis – using a set pattern that I hope will allow time for more in-depth writing moving forward. Part of this goal includes branching out from professional and policy issues.
The two projects are to document my work with students on critical reading and writing at the Grade 7 level and to revisit the intersection of genocide, teaching, and philosophy of education.
